R-parity violation in SU(5)
We show that judiciously chosen R-parity violating terms in the minimal
renormalizable supersymmetric SU(5) are able to correct all the
phenomenologically wrong mass relations between down quarks and charged
leptons. The model can accommodate neutrino masses as well. One of the most
striking consequences is a large mixing between the electron and the Higgsino.
We show that this can still be in accord with data in some regions of the
parameter space and possibly falsified in future experiments.Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure. Revised version. To appear in JHE
Speech Emotion Recognition Considering Local Dynamic Features
Recently, increasing attention has been directed to the study of the speech
emotion recognition, in which global acoustic features of an utterance are
mostly used to eliminate the content differences. However, the expression of
speech emotion is a dynamic process, which is reflected through dynamic
durations, energies, and some other prosodic information when one speaks. In
this paper, a novel local dynamic pitch probability distribution feature, which
is obtained by drawing the histogram, is proposed to improve the accuracy of
speech emotion recognition. Compared with most of the previous works using
global features, the proposed method takes advantage of the local dynamic
information conveyed by the emotional speech. Several experiments on Berlin
Database of Emotional Speech are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the
proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the local dynamic
information obtained with the proposed method is more effective for speech
emotion recognition than the traditional global features.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, accepted by ISSP 201
A realistic pattern of fermion masses from a five-dimensional SO(10) model
We provide a unified description of fermion masses and mixing angles in the
framework of a supersymmetric grand unified SO(10) model with anarchic Yukawa
couplings of order unity. The space-time is five dimensional and the extra flat
spatial dimension is compactified on the orbifold ,
leading to Pati-Salam gauge symmetry on the boundary where Yukawa interactions
are localised. The gauge symmetry breaking is completed by means of a rather
economic scalar sector, avoiding the doublet-triplet splitting problem. The
matter fields live in the bulk and their massless modes get exponential
profiles, which naturally explain the mass hierarchy of the different fermion
generations. Quarks and leptons properties are naturally reproduced by a
mechanism, first proposed by Kitano and Li, that lifts the SO(10) degeneracy of
bulk masses in terms of a single parameter. The model provides a realistic
pattern of fermion masses and mixing angles for large values of . It
favours normally ordered neutrino mass spectrum with the lightest neutrino mass
below 0.01 eV and no preference for leptonic CP violating phases. The right
handed neutrino mass spectrum is very hierarchical and does not allow for
thermal leptogenesis. We analyse several variants of the basic framework and
find that the results concerning the fermion spectrum are remarkably stable.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, 4 table
The signalling channel of Central Bank interventions:modelling the Yen/US dollar exchange rate
This paper presents a theoretical framework analysing the signalling channel of exchange rate interventions as an informational trigger. We develop an implicit target zone framework with learning in order to model the signalling channel. The theoretical premise of the model is that interventions convey signals that communicate information about the exchange rate objectives of the central bank. The model is used to analyse the impact of Japanese FX interventions during the period 1999--2011 on the yen/US dollar dynamics
Complete resummation of chirally-enhanced loop-effects in the MSSM with non-minimal sources of flavor-violation
In this article we present the complete resummation of the leading
chirally-enhanced corrections stemming from gluino-squark, chargino-sfermion
and neutralino-sfermion loops in the MSSM with non-minimal sources of
flavor-violation. We compute the finite renormalization of fermion masses and
the CKM matrix induced by chirality-flipping self-energies. In the decoupling
limit Msusy>>v, which is an excellent approximation to the full theory, we give
analytic results for the effective gaugino(higgsino)-fermion-sfermion and the
Higgs-fermion-fermion vertices. Using these vertices as effective Feynman
rules, all leading chirally-enhanced corrections can consistently be included
into perturbative calculations of Feynman amplitudes. We also give a
generalized parametrization for the bare CKM matrix which extends the classic
Wolfenstein parametrization to the case of complex parameters lambda and A.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figures; typos correcte
Radiographic Image Enhancement by Wiener Decorrelation
The primary focus of the application of image processing to radiography is the problem of segmentation. The general segmentation problem has been attacked on a broad front [1, 2], and thresholding, in particular, is a popular method [1, 3-6]. Unfortunately, geometric unsharpness destroys the crisp edges needed for unambiguous decisions, and this difficulty can be considered a problem in filtering in which the object is to devise a high-pass (sharpening) filter. This approach has been studied for more than 20 years [7-13]
A Collective Breaking of R-Parity
Supersymmetric theories with an R-parity generally yield a striking missing
energy signature, with cascade decays concluding in a neutralino that escapes
the detector. In theories where R-parity is broken the missing energy is
replaced with additional jets or leptons, often making traditional search
strategies ineffective. Such R-parity violation is very constrained, however,
by resulting B and L violating signals, requiring couplings so small that LSPs
will decay outside the detector in all but a few scenarios. In theories with
additional matter fields, R-parity can be broken collectively, such that
R-parity is not broken by any single coupling, but only by an ensemble of
couplings. Cascade decays can proceed normally, with each step only sensitive
to one or two couplings at a time, but B and L violation requires the full set,
yielding a highly suppressed constraint. s-channel production of new scalar
states, typically small for standard RPV, can be large when RPV is broken
collectively. While missing energy is absent, making these models difficult to
discover by traditional SUSY searches, they produce complicated many object
resonances (MORes), with many different possible numbers of jets and leptons.
We outline a simple model and discuss its discoverability at the LHC.Comment: 28 pages, 10 figure
Ferredoxin containing bacteriocins suggest a novel mechanism of iron uptake in Pectobacterium spp
In order to kill competing strains of the same or closely related bacterial species, many bacteria produce potent narrow-spectrum protein antibiotics known as bacteriocins. Two sequenced strains of the phytopathogenic bacterium Pectobacterium carotovorum carry genes encoding putative bacteriocins which have seemingly evolved through a recombination event to encode proteins containing an N-terminal domain with extensive similarity to a [2Fe-2S] plant ferredoxin and a C-terminal colicin M-like catalytic domain. In this work, we show that these genes encode active bacteriocins, pectocin M1 and M2, which target strains of Pectobacterium carotovorum and Pectobacterium atrosepticum with increased potency under iron limiting conditions. The activity of pectocin M1 and M2 can be inhibited by the addition of spinach ferredoxin, indicating that the ferredoxin domain of these proteins acts as a receptor binding domain. This effect is not observed with the mammalian ferredoxin protein adrenodoxin, indicating that Pectobacterium spp. carries a specific receptor for plant ferredoxins and that these plant pathogens may acquire iron from the host through the uptake of ferredoxin. In further support of this hypothesis we show that the growth of strains of Pectobacterium carotovorum and atrosepticum that are not sensitive to the cytotoxic effects of pectocin M1 is enhanced in the presence of pectocin M1 and M2 under iron limiting conditions. A similar growth enhancement under iron limiting conditions is observed with spinach ferrodoxin, but not with adrenodoxin. Our data indicate that pectocin M1 and M2 have evolved to parasitise an existing iron uptake pathway by using a ferredoxin-containing receptor binding domain as a Trojan horse to gain entry into susceptible cells
